Pilot Shoe

🟢 Downhole Drilling Pilot Shoe and Plate System: The Foundational Start for HDD

Setting the Stage: Precise Initiation in Soft Ground

The Pilot Shoe and Plate System is the trusted solution for initiating Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD) bores in soft, cohesive, and mixed non-rock formations. This assembly is designed to provide a stable, balanced point of contact with the ground, ensuring the pilot bore starts accurately, smoothly, and with minimal steering correction required upfront.

As a manufacturer, we provide robust, high-tolerance Shoes and Plates engineered for maximum longevity and perfect compatibility with your drill rods.

Description

The system consists of two primary components designed to work together to initiate the bore and guide the pilot string:

  1. The Pilot Shoe (The Cutting Element)
  • Design: A streamlined, solid steel head with a tapered, conical nose.
  • Cutting Action: Primarily a ploughing and pushing action. It efficiently displaces soft soil (like clay, loam, and sand) to form the initial pilot bore, requiring less torque than traditional rotary cutters.
  • Steering Mechanism: Features an asymmetrical front face or strategically placed fluid ports (jets) that allow the operator to change direction by holding the tool face steady while pushing.
  1. The Starter Plate (The Connection)
  • Design: A flat, robust circular or rectangular plate that acts as the transition piece between the Pilot Shoe and the first drill rod or housing.
  • Connection Point: It features the precise API or OEM Thread on the rear to connect to the drill string and a robust connection point on the front to secure the Pilot Shoe.
  • Role in Steering: Ensures the Pilot Shoe is held rigid and square to the drill string, providing a consistent platform for directional adjustments.
