Description
 Primary Functions in HDD
- Thread Transition: Connects components with different thread types (e.g., API IF to API REG) or different thread sizes (e.g., 2 3/8” IF to 3 1/2” IF).
- Diameter Transition: Connects components with different outside diameters (OD), such as connecting a small drill pipe to a large reamer.
- Saver Sub Role: When placed between the drill pipe/rod and the most frequently connected component (like the swivel or the first reamer), it acts as a Saver Sub. Being the least expensive component, it absorbs connection wear, protecting the threads on the more expensive drill rods or rig components.
 Manufacturing Specifications
| Specification | Standard Detail | Importance |
|---|---|---|
| Material Grade | AISI 4140/4145H Alloy Steel (Heat Treated) | Provides superior yield strength and torsional capacity to withstand rig torque. |
| Shoulder Length | Typically, 6 inches to 28 inches (Shoulder-to-Shoulder) | Length is chosen to accommodate wrench flats and maintain structural stability. |
| Surface Treatment | Phosphating and/or Copper Plating | Prevents thread galling (seizing) during the initial make-up and use. |
| Standard | API Spec 7-1 (Rotary Shouldered Connections) | Ensures dimensional precision, thread form accuracy, and interchangeability. |
