Description
The effectiveness of the Bent Sub lies in its unique, manufactured geometry:
- Axis Offset: The Bent Sub is meticulously machined so that the axis of its lower threaded connection is slightly offset (usually less than 3 degrees) from the axis of the upper connection.
- Creating Tilt: When made up into the BHA, this offset introduces a deliberate “tilt angle” to the elements below it, including the drilling bit itself. This offset makes the bit face preferentially in one direction (the tool face).
- Non-Rotating Steering: Because the centre of the bit is offset from the centre line of the main drill string, the drill string above the Bent Sub cannot be rotated from the surface while steering.
